January Meeting 2010 Happy New Year!

January 2010 Minutes

The January meeting of the HK LWV was held on the 12th at the Branksome Crest Function room. Debra Joyce welcomed everyone and introduced guests and new members. Before turning the meeting over to Robin Ernest, who introduced our guest speaker, Debra asked that I read a letter from Rosann Kao of HKIS sending regrets that her political science students, who were invited to attend this meeting, could not due to a conflict. Robin then introduced Nomatemba Tambo, the Consul General of South Africa to Hong Kong and Macau. Ms. Tambo gave a fascinating talk on the history of the ANC in South Africa, of which her father, Oliver Tambo, was a founding member. She also gave anecdotes of her life in London where her father was exiled after a charge of treason was leveled against him She ended her talk with the current political and cultural situation in South Africa. She says great strides have been made especially with regard to women in positions of political authority and predicts a woman president in her country in the next ten years. But she says “there is still much work to be done.” A brief question-and-answer period followed. Additional photos taken at the meeting provided by Rachel Monballiu can be found at:
